もう一度現代に..

日本に稲作が伝来するよりもはるか昔､およそ1万年前にはすでに使われていた｢大麻布｣｡衣服や魚網､蚊帳などの日常具だけでなく神社の注連縄にも使われ､麻の葉は厄除けの意味を持つなど､神聖な素材として明治時代初期まで愛されてきました｡さらに麻の実や麻ミルクは食に､城の漆喰として住に､様々なシーンで日本の文化に影響を与えています｡
｢麻｣は暑い時期向けの素材というイメージが強いかもしれませんが､大麻繊維のユニークな特性により､冬は暖かく､速乾性や接触冷感を持つため夏はさらりと涼しく､気温､気候に関わらず年中心地よくまとえる､大変優れた素材です｡
また､成長が早くどこでも育ち､他の天然素材と比べ､水や農薬の使用が少ない大麻は､栽培段階から環境負荷がとても低いサスティナブルな素材としても注目されています｡

｢majotae PROJECT｣では､日本人が忘れてしまった布｢大麻布｣を､｢majotae（まよたえ）｣として現代に甦らせることで､日本の大麻布文化が育んで来た､自然との共存､持続可能な生活様式を世界に発信します｡
今回､｢majotae｣開発の起源となった､江戸や明治の大麻古布の展示と､それらのデジタル上でのアーカイブを行うことで､1万年の歴史を持つ日本の｢大麻布｣を､日本が世界に誇るファブリックとして訴求､啓蒙､普及していきます｡

美術家であり自然布の収集家･研究家として知られる吉田真一郎氏が所有する1,000点を超える大麻古布コレクションは､世界的にも他に例がありません｡そのうち､19世紀（江戸～明治時代）につくられた貴重な自然布の特別展示を､京都のテキスタイルギャラリー｢真妙庵｣にて行います｡

エイベックスが2011年から始めた大麻布の復活プロジェクトを通して､日本人が古くから使い続けてきた大麻布を､現代の技術によって本来の風合いまで甦らせたものが｢majotae｣です｡機械紡績に適さない大麻繊維の課題を克服し､Tシャツなどのアパレル領域をはじめ､インテリアなどのライフスタイル領域にまで⼤⿇布の⽤途を拡⼤していきます｡

真妙庵

江戸･明治時代につくられた､大麻繊維の貴重な自然布のアーカイヴを展示するテキスタイルギャラリー｡時代を超えた真の布(妙)が､多くの人々にインスピレーションをもたらす場(庵)となることを目指しています｡

展示に使われる布は､吉田氏が代表を務める近世麻布研究所の協力により､博物館同等の精密な繊維検査を受け､糸の素材まで明らかになったものを使用します｡
糸の績み方や織の手加減など､布の微視的な美しさに焦点をあて､大麻古布をご紹介します｡特に19世紀以前の手仕事によってつくり出された布は､手績みの糸を使い､手機によって織られており､糸の種類､太さ､織の強弱や染色により､ひとつひとつ微妙な差が生まれており､多様な視点からご覧いただくことができます｡

ギャラリーでは､表具された大麻布のほか､多数の裂を揃え､貴重なアーカイヴ資料としてご覧いただけます｡また､苧麻繊維などの代表的な麻布も扱い､さらに､吉田の長年にわたる大麻繊維と糸の研究から生まれた､過去と未来をつなぐファブリック｢majotae｣の生地や､プロダクトについてもご覧いただくことができます｡

I.一万年の物語

I.A story encompassing 10,000 years

日本人と大麻の歴史は古く
約一万年前のものとされる､縄文時代創世記の集落の遺跡から
大麻の縄が出土しています｡

日本の象徴､稲作が伝来したのが三千年前｡
それより遥か七千年前から､ずっと日本人の寄り添ってきた大麻｡
｢majotae｣には､一万年に渡る壮大な物語があります｡

The far-reaching history of Japanese people and taima-fu (hemp fabric) extends back approximately 10,000 years, and hemp ropes have been excavated from Japanese archaeological sites from those ancient times.

A symbol of Japan, rice cultivation has been passed down for over 3000 years.
But hemp has been essential in Japanese life for an astonishing 7000 years longer than this.
“majotae” contains a magnificent story encompassing 10,000 years of history.

Ⅱ.日本の衣食住に寄り添ってきた素材

日本人は､衣食住の様々な場面で､大麻を利用してきました｡
その用途は広く､日本各地の風土や気候に適応した麻織物､丈夫な魚網や釣り糸､
蚊帳､麻の実､麻ミルク､城の漆喰など多種多様です｡

大麻は､日本人の多様性､アイデンティティと深く結びついた植物です｡

Japanese people came to use hemp for food, clothing and housing in various situations.
The incredibly broad range of uses for this material, well-suited to the climate and weather all across Japan, includes hemp fabric, strong fishing nets, fishing line, mosquito net, hempseed, hemp milk and exterior plaster for castles, etc.

Hemp is a plant deeply tied to the diversity and identity of Japanese people.

Ⅲ.邪気を祓い､神の力が宿る

Ⅲ.Wards off evil spirits and contains the power of the gods

神社の鈴縄やしめ縄など､大麻は､神とつながるためのコミュニケーション手段､架け橋として､神道において重要な役割を果たしてきました｡
日本人は､お盆の時期､大麻の茎から繊維を分離したオガラを焚いて､先祖の精霊を迎え入れます｡
祭りの語源は､麻吊り｡
大麻を要所に吊ることで､魔が吊られて無くなることを意味します｡

Used for bell straps and symbolic ropes at Shinto shrines, hemp is linked to the gods. It fulfills a crucial role in Shinto as a bridge that lets humans communicate with the spiritual world.
During the summer Obon period, Japanese people burn ogara, hemp reeds, to welcome back their ancestors’ spirits.

Ⅳ.長く使えば使うほど､白く柔らかくなっていく

大麻布は､しなやかで強度を持ちながら､使い込むほどに肌に馴染み､柔らかく､光沢と白さを増していく､
経年良化の特性があります｡

この特性を日常の営みの中で自然と理解していた縄文人は､
大麻布を水に晒して､次第に柔らかくなっていった布を着用していたと考えられています｡

Taima-fu possesses supple strength and grows softer and more comfortable with use while developing more shine and a brighter white color — displaying its characteristic feature of improving over time.

After naturally coming to understand this characteristic over the course of their daily activities, people in ancient Japan are believed to have worn hemp fabric that had been soaked in water and gradually softened over time.

Ⅴ.現代のアパレルの常識は非常識

Ⅴ.Defying common assumptions of modern-day apparel

麻は硬くてザラザラする｡夏の素材｡
春夏､秋冬といった､現代のアパレル産業が作り出した常識に､大麻布はまったく当てはまりません｡

速乾性と保湿性など､大麻布が持つ様々な機能性は､
季節や流行にかかわらず､一日中､一年中､気候を問わず､着る人の肌を心地よく包み込みます｡

大麻布の可能性は､常識の範疇を超えていきます｡

The various functionalities of taima-fu such as
quick drying and heat retention wrap the wearer’s skin in comfort regardless of season or trend all day, year-round.

The possibilities of taima-fu exceed the limitations of common assumptions.

Ⅵ.誤解された植物

Ⅵ.A mischaracterized and misunderstood plant

繊維からエネルギーまで､大麻の｢未来素材｣としての潜在的な可能性が故に､20世紀以降､大麻は制約と混同の歴史を歩みます｡

日本でも､第二次世界大戦後に国内での栽培が制限されたことや､
大麻繊維が紡績に適さないとされたことから工業化に乗り遅れ､
今ではまったく一般に流通していません｡

こうして大麻布は､日本人の生活の中から､次第に忘れ去られていきます｡

Taima-fu has great potential ranging from textiles to energy as a “future fabric,” but its history from the 20th century onward has been marred by restrictions and confusion.

Due to significant restrictions on cannabis cultivation after World War II, and apparent difficulties in spinning hemp threads which delayed industrialization, hemp has become a rare fabric today — even in Japan.

In this way, hemp fabric gradually came to be forgotten and removed from Japanese people’s everyday lives.

Ⅶ.世界に通用する､大麻布の復活

ひとりの男の夢が､日本人が忘れてしまった布｢大麻布｣を復活させます｡

そのために､古来から続く大麻布の制作工程を徹底的に研究｡
大麻とは思えないほど極上の肌触りを､約8年の歳月をかけて完成させました｡

For that purpose, we have thoroughly researched taima-fu production methods continued from ancient times.
This luxurious texture you would never suspect to be hemp was achieved after approximately eight years of effort.

We have now arrived at an age of returning to our tactile roots.
